Connect Excel Online to Infograph

What it brings in: worksheets.

What you need

  • A Microsoft account with the workbook saved in its own OneDrive.
  • The workbook as an .xlsx file, with column names in the first row of each worksheet.
  • At work or school, your organisation may need an admin to approve Infograph the first time.

Steps

  1. Open Excel Online in Infograph

Open Excel Online in Infograph and press Continue to Excel Online. A Microsoft sign-in window opens.

    Continue to Excel Online
  2. Sign in and accept

Sign in with the Microsoft account whose OneDrive holds the workbook. Microsoft lists what Infograph asks to read. Press Accept.

  3. Choose a workbook

Infograph lists the .xlsx workbooks in your OneDrive. Pick one and press Add workbook. Each workbook becomes its own connection, named after the file. To pick from another account's OneDrive, press Use a different account.

  4. Choose your worksheets

Each worksheet becomes a table, and its first row becomes the column names. Leave out tabs with no data, such as notes, because an empty worksheet fails its sync. Infograph starts loading the rest.

  5. Add more workbooks

Connect Excel Online again and pick the next workbook. Microsoft has already approved Infograph, so you do not sign in again.

What it syncs

Each becomes a table in Infolake that you can chart, report on or ask about. You choose which to sync.

Worksheetsworksheets

Each worksheet in the workbooks you pick becomes its own table, with the first row as column names and numbers and dates kept as numbers and dates. Refreshed in full on every sync.

Ask: “What is the total in the revenue column of our forecast sheet, by month?”

Troubleshooting

Each entry is the message Infograph shows when a connection fails. Open it for the fix.

Access was not allowed, so nothing was connected. Connect again and choose Allow.

The sign-in was answered with Cancel or Deny, so nothing was connected and Infograph holds no access. Press Connect again and choose Allow. Infograph uses the access only to read and sync your data.

Your account cannot read this data. Ask an admin of the account for access, then connect again.

Microsoft answered that this account cannot open the workbook. Check you can open it in Excel for the web while signed in with the same account. If the file was moved out of your OneDrive or its sharing changed, connect again and pick it from the list. If your organisation limits which apps can read OneDrive files, ask your Microsoft 365 admin to allow Infograph.

Infograph's access was removed or has expired. Re-authenticate to resume syncing.

Microsoft no longer accepts Infograph's sign-in. That happens when the permission is removed from your Microsoft account, when an admin revokes it for your organisation, or sometimes after a password change. Press Re-authenticate and sign in with the same account. If syncs keep failing after that, Microsoft is refusing a permission: check you can still open the workbook in Excel for the web.

Common problems

These happen in Excel Online itself, where Infograph cannot see them.

Microsoft says Need admin approval

Your organisation only lets admins approve new apps. If the screen offers a request form, send it with a short reason, and you get an email once an admin decides. Otherwise ask your Microsoft 365 admin to grant consent for Infograph in the Microsoft Entra admin center, then press Connect again.

Your workbook is not in the list

The list shows .xlsx files in your own OneDrive. A workbook someone shared with you, or one stored in a SharePoint team site, does not appear, and neither does an older .xls file. Save a copy as .xlsx in your OneDrive, then connect again. Infograph then syncs that copy, not the original.

The list is empty

Infograph shows No Excel workbooks found in this OneDrive when the account you signed in with has none. Check which account you used, and press Use a different account to switch.
