Connect Render Postgres to Infograph

What it brings in: Every table and view the user can read.

What you need

  • A Render Postgres database, and access to it in the Render Dashboard.
  • A paid database for anything you want to keep. Free databases expire after 30 days.
  • Infograph's sync servers connect from 51.222.152.247.

Your connection string

Each part is one thing you fill in, and each can fail on its own.

Render Postgres· Connection string
postgresql://:@dpg-[id]-a.[region]-postgres.render.comhost: fix for "We couldn't find that host. Check the host name, then try again."/[database]database: fix for "That database does not exist on this server."?sslmode=require
AddressSign inDatabaseSelect a label for its fix

Steps

  1. Allow Infograph if you restrict access

If Access Control under Networking on the Info page limits which addresses can connect, add the addresses below.

    51.222.152.247/32
  2. Copy the External Database URL

Open your database's page in the Render Dashboard and click Connect at the top right. Copy the External Database URL. Its host ends in -postgres.render.com. The bare dpg-...-a host is internal and works only inside Render.

    postgresql://[user]:[password]@dpg-[id]-a.[region]-postgres.render.com/[database]?sslmode=require
  3. Paste it in Infograph and choose your tables

Open Render Postgres in Infograph, paste the string and press Connect. Pick the tables you want and Infograph starts loading them.

Allow 51.222.152.247 through your firewall so Infograph can connect.

Troubleshooting

Each entry is the message Infograph shows when a connection fails. Open it for the fix.

This host is not reachable from Infograph. Use your database's public address.

Copy the External Database URL from Connect. The bare dpg-...-a host is only reachable inside Render.

We couldn't find that host. Check the host name, then try again.

The host on its own (dpg-...-a) is the internal one. Copy the External Database URL, whose host ends in -postgres.render.com.

The host refused the connection. Check the port, and that your database accepts connections from Infograph's address.

If Access Control on the Info page limits which addresses can connect, add 51.222.152.247. Check the port is 5432, or left out.

The server closed the connection. Check that it allows Infograph's address, and whether it requires an encrypted connection.

The server answered, then hung up before Infograph could sign in. Check it allows 51.222.152.247: some hosts close the connection rather than refuse it. If the server accepts only encrypted connections, set SSL Mode to Require under Advanced.

The host did not answer in time. Check the host and port, and that your firewall allows Infograph's address.

Usually Access Control. Add 51.222.152.247 under Networking on the Info page, then try again.

The username or password was not accepted.

Copy the External Database URL again, since it carries the user and password. Characters such as @, # or / must be percent-encoded, so @ becomes %40.

Those credentials were not accepted.

Copy the External Database URL again rather than typing the details. If the database was free and is more than 30 days old, it may have expired.

That database does not exist on this server.

The database name is the part after the last / in the URL. Copy the External Database URL again so it matches.
